acorn

We are Squirrel Class and we are a mixture of Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Pre-School. Our Teachers are Mrs Fletcher and Mrs Denham.  Mrs Keenan and Mrs Ord also work with us.

Summer Topic

In Squirrel class we are working on the whole school topic of Me, My World and Beyond through the half term topics of Let’s Move and Let’s Work. This half term we are looking at different forms of transport, the history of transport and where a rocket, a plane, a train and a car can take you. We will be investigating moving vehicles and designing and making our own. A trip to the Discovery Museum in Newcastle will further extend this knowledge. As part of the Let’s Work topic we will be inviting parents, and grandparents into school to talk about the world of work and looking at the opportunities our children have. We intend to work on the school garden , growing plants and maintaining them.

Spring Topic

This term the Squirrels are stepping back in time. We are going right back to The Stone Age and through the books of “Stone Age boy”, “Ug” and “Cave baby” we will be finding out about life in the Stone Age. In Art we will be looking at cave paintings and making our own paint using natural materials. Our role play area will be transformed into a cave dwelling complete with fire and tools. The focus in writing will be instruction writing with the help of the story ” How to wash a mammoth”. Next half term we are looking forward to a special event where we will make a fire and  cook our own food over it.Then we will be moving on to learn about Knights and castles, learning about the local castles in our area. Traditional stories will also be studied and story writing will be the area we focus on. The topic will culminate in a banquet to celebrate.

Autumn Topic

Our topic this term is Picture This and we are starting our topic by celebrating picture postcards from our summer holidays and days out. A whole school trip to Bowes Museum will be the starting point of our work on famous illustrators such as Quentin Blake. We will also be studying the work of Picasso and Giuseppe Arcimboldo. As we learn more about different artists and their styles we will be producing lots of art work which we will be displaying in our very own Squirrel class gallery. A second class trip to a workshop by the children’s author Helen Stephens will link in to our work on making storybooks. After half term we will learn about Australia through aboriginal art. We will be comparing the geographical similarities and differences to our country. The term will end with Christmas festivities, pantomime and the Christmas performance.
