Batik Art Work Bags

8th April 2022 By katrinascanlon

In Design and Technology we made batik patterns by making patterns with PVA glue.  When the glue dried, we applied acrylic paint and let it dry.  Then we washed the fabric which removed the glue and excess paint, so we had died fabric.  We hand-sewed the side of our purses/ wallets and Mrs O’Brien guided us to use the sewing machine to make the channel for our rope pulls.  Finally, we added the pull ropes using a long upholstery needle.
Don’t they look amazing!

Science Week & Life Centre Visit

31st March 2022 By katrinascanlon

British Science Week

We have enjoyed celebrating British Science week at school, with a trip to the Life Centre at Newcastle where we enjoyed investigating in the creative zone, attending an animal show, visiting the planetarium and Key Stage Two also participated in a Light workshop. In school, we have been planting seeds and predicting how they will grow and we have been finding out about forces. On Monday the Life Centre organised for children in Key Stage Two to have an online chat with a scientist.

We also launched our CREST science award which will run for the next 12 months. CREST is the British Science Association’s scheme for STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) project work that inspires young people to think and behave like scientists and engineers. It is a nationally recognised scheme for student-led project work in the STEM subjects. The children will need to complete 8 challenges in order to gain their award. These will take place in school but can also be completed at home.

Mother’s & Special Person Lunch

25th March 2022 By katrinascanlon

We had a lovely Mother’s & Special Person Lunch in school on Tuesday this week.  It was a great day, enjoyed by all!
There was a choice of chicken dinner, quiche and jacket potato for mains and cornflake tart & custard, chocolate cake and fruit for dessert.
This is a thank you email  we got from one of our parents after the event:
‘Just wanted to thank all involved for my Mother’s Day lunch today. It was lovely to be invited into school and spend time with everyone and the food was yummy too.’

Chinese New Year at Woodland Primary

11th February 2022 By Admin Linda

What a fun and exciting week we had celebrating Chinese New Year 2022 (Year of the Tiger).  This year we made information texts about Chinese New Year, listened to and made Chinese music using pentatonic scales, made marbled paper and used it to make lanterns, made cherry blossom paintings and used the overhead projector to tell the zodiac story with puppets and made a huge dragon to show in our procession in assembly.  Karen our cook also made us a delicious Chinese themed lunch.

It was a very busy week!

Children Challenging Industry Project

19th January 2022 By katrinascanlon

During our Wonderful Woodland topic, we took part in a Children Challenging Industry project. We tested three fun experiments from our local GSK [GlaxoSmithKline]. We met our GSK representative called Molly through Teams.

The first experiment we tried was making scented soap for Glaxo. After making our soap we did another Teams call to Molly, to feedback our results. Our next experiment was toothpaste making and once we made it we tested it with many different experiments. Our last experiment was trying to mix oil and water. We were given 3 mystery liquids to add to a pot of separated oil and water one at a time. We all enjoyed or GSK science experiments, they were fun, interesting and we couldn’t wait to find out what we were going to do next.

After every experiment we fed our findings and recommendations back to Molly at GSK, we wrote our experiments up and filled in a form at the end of the project, Molly looked at them all with her colleagues and GSK were so impressed they gave all of us a certificate, badge and pen and also awarded 3 top prizes.
