Welcome to Squirrel Class 2019-20
We are Squirrel Class and we are a mixture of Reception, Year 1, Year 2 and Pre-School. Our Teachers are Mr Petty and Mrs Denham. Mrs Keenan and Mrs Ord also work with us.
Ingenious Inventions is our topic this term in Squirrel class. We will be exploring how toys have changed over the years and compare toys from the past and the modern day. If you have any old toys at home from when you or someone else in your family was a child then we would love for you to bring them in so we can explore them.
We will also be exploring how simple toys are made and the materials used to do this in Science before designing and creating our own toys. Later in the term we will be learning about the life and work of inventors who have changed the ways in which we communicate, such as: Alexander Graham Bell, Tim Berners Lee and Dr Shirley Ann Jackson.
Our trip this term will be to the Bowes Museum to explore their collections of toys from different ages and take part in their exploring toys from the past workshop.
We will read a range of fiction and non-fiction texts linked to our theme including:
Our writing this term links to this and we will be writing descriptions of toys, recounts of our experiences with toys and our trip to the Bowes Museum and comparisons of old and new toys. We will also be writing explanations about how things work and instructions about how to create some of the art and toys we make in class. Later in the term we will also write biographies linked to the inventors we learn about.
In Art and Design we will be working with fabric using tie-dye and batik techniques to create artworks reflecting the theme of winter and influenced by the work of famous artists such as Bridget Riley and Max Ernst. In Music we will be exploring the musical elements of duration, beat, rhythm, timbre and texture. We will use these elements to compose our own musical stories with winter and toy themes, recording these with graphic notation so others can play our tunes. We will also be using computers to help us create musical sequences. In computing we will also look at how technology is used to help us in our everyday lives as well as learning about how to stay safe in cyberspace.
In RE and Citizenship we are learning about belonging to different communities and the festival of Easter in Christianity and Spring festivals from other religions.
